Xirrus have announced the extension of their 802.11ac solution, introducing the XR-630 AP with ACExpress.
The XR-630 is the first AP of its kind supporting 802.11ac on both radios, allowing for a 100% 802.11ac operation and a clear path to migrate to the new standard over time. Traditional APs are fixed with one radio operating in either one of the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands; however the new XR-630 is software programmable with support for both bands and all Wi-Fi modes (802.11a/b/g/n/ac) on every radio. This enables complete flexibility, allowing the new AP to be deployed one way initially, then later changed as needed with the click of a button in order to accommodate changing Wi-Fi devices.
ACExpress leverages the software-programmable capability to optimize 802.11ac performance. Wi-Fi is a shared medium, meaning slower (e.g., 802.11a/n 5GHz) and faster (e.g., 802.11ac) devices often need to share the same resources. Slower 2.4GHz and 5GHz devices will starve the bandwidth available to faster ones, reducing the performance of 802.11ac devices significantly. ACExpress intelligently separates these devices by type onto different radios, meaning that 802.11ac devices achieve maximum performance and the overall performance of all other devices is improved. Traditional fixed APs cannot support this since each radio operates on different bands. ACExpress is supported on all Xirrus 802.11ac products, both APs and Arrays.
